On Sunday the Carlow Senior Hurlers lost out to Galway by 2-25 to 2-14.

Carlow had chances to get that bit closer but will drive on with great confidence despite the margin of defeat.

TALKING POINTS

Conor’s C and W: Conor Cooney’s 1-10 (1-5 from play) and Conor Whelan’s 0-3 in a very influential cameo off the bench proved crucial to Galway. Whelan’s pedigree is proven, scorer of 16-112 (160) in 48 championship games, all from play. Cooney brought his championship tally, goals and points combined, into the 200s on Sunday, the St Thomas’s man now having racked up 12-171 (207) in 57 championship games. 11-90 from play, 1-81 from placed balls.

Mouse: Mouse might have missed a couple of first half frees, had a second half penalty saved but the St Mullins sharpshooter landed 0-8, 0-3 from play, scores of the highest quality, and a couple of his five from frees long range missiles. Marty’s SHC tally from 40 appearances stands at 15-274 (319), 11-73 (106) from play, 4-201 from placed balls.

Ciaran Whelan: Plaqued by injury it was great to see the Ballinkillen clubman start and what a start, a point almost directly from the throw-in. Put in a good shift, fouled for a few scoreable frees too.

Dion Wall: He made a surging long run late in the game that spoke volumes for his fitness and attitude, ran into traffic eventually but had made some ground on a rousing raid.

Richie Coady: Continues to define the years. Hurling with Carlow’s flagship hurlers since 2007, not only played the entire 70 minutes here but got on a couple of balls near the finish and made good use of them.
